Ronan

Kurt Michaels was seated in the interrogation room when Ten and Ronan got off the elevator. Fitz and Jude were standing in the hall, watching the man through the one-way glass.

When Ten and Ronan approached, Jude opened his mouth to say something, most likely his impression of the man nervously twitching on the other side of the glass, but Ronan held a hand up, stopping Jude in his tracks. He pointed to Ten, who Ronan knew was taking Kurt’s measure.

“I’ve never read a more nervous person in my life.” Ten shook his head. “It’s not just the way his knee is bouncing or the way he can’t sit still for more than two seconds at a time. His entire body, no, his entire being, is wrapped in a panic burrito. He’s either the most guilty or the most innocent man I’ve ever come in contact with.”

Ronan thought back over the many suspects Tennyson had read over the last several years. They ran the gamut from angry to weeping, but he couldn’t remember anyone acting like Kurt Michaels. The man resembled a scared rabbit ready to bolt. “What do you say we put him out of his misery?”

Fitzgibbon nodded. He handed a manila folder to Ronan and opened the door. “Good afternoon, Mr. Michaels.” Jude followed close behind.

Flipping through the folder, Ronan saw that it contained the original witness statement given to the police back in 2013, two days after Amber’s body had been found, along with three other interviews conducted over the years. Ronan had read the material when he’d first gone over the case file before his concussion. He had a feeling Fitzgibbon wanted him to have the information close at hand in case his brain had a Swiss cheese moment. He quickly skimmed the pages and handed them to Tennyson.

When Ronan walked into the room, he saw Jude in the exact position he’d been in that morning with Will Jericho, standing behind and to the left of the trembling man, his arms crossed over his chest, emitting that same junkyard dog energy. Fitzgibbon sat across from them, a bland look on his face.

“This is Captain Ronan O’Mara and our consultant, psychic Tennyson Grimm,” Fitzgibbon introduced.

Ronan almost laughed at the shocked look on Michaels’s face. He looked as if he were going to shit a solid gold brick right then and there. Nodding at Kurt, Ronan took the seat next to Fitzgibbon, with Ten sitting on his left.

No one said a word. Ronan was content to let Fitzgibbon take the lead on this one. The longer they sat, the more twitchy Michaels got.

“So, Mr. Michaels, tell us why you’re here.” Kevin grabbed his legal pad and pen.

“You’re the new detectives working on Amber’s case. I saw your press conference, Captain Fitzgibbon. I-I wanted to come down here and speak to you. Tell you about my relationship with Amber.” Kurt repeatedly wiped his hands on his thighs. Jude had been right; the man was sweating like a pig who knew it was dinner.
